GI Mentor®
GI Endoscopy Surgical Training Simulator
_______________________________________

The GI Mentor is the most comprehensive training module for GI procedures in the world...
With GI Mentor, clinicians are able to practice upper and lower GI procedures across
an extensive training curriculum including everything from the fundamentals of endoscopic
skills to advanced procedures such as ERCP and Endoscopic Ultrasound (EUS). Features
include an extensive library of virtual patients, and over 120 tasks & cases including:
flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, gastroscopy and emergency bleeding scenarios.
The GI Mentor has been specifically designed to offer a true-

Objective feedback on each procedure allows trainees to review their performance and also save the performance for reviewing at a later date. Feedback parameters include scope location, state of the GI tract, problematic occurrences and patient discomfort during the procedure.
As a designated instructor, the GI Mentor allows you to review the saved performances of all trainees and also gives the option to designate that trainees MUST save performances and decide whether trainees are able to see educational aids and videos during procedures.
Instructors can quickly and easily build a bespoke training programme, using the 20 different upper GI and lower GI cases to prepare a custom curriculum which can be assigned to one or multiple trainees, or be saved as a template.
During procedures, multiple educational aids provide instructions and guidance, demonstrative videos and running feedback.
The ability to build bespoke training programmes, to set up instructors, and for
these instructors to be able to review trainees’ performance, makes GI Mentor ideal

Simbionix are currently working with the Society of American Gastrointestinal and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES) on the Fundamentals of Endoscopic Surgery (FES) online training and testing programme.

The GI Mentor’s comprehensive library of modules provides a curriculum for the training of basic and advanced procedures, from rehearsing basic endoscopic skills to carrying out specific complex and challenging procedures. Constant collaboration with the medical community means that the library of modules is always under development, so let us know your thoughts and watch this space...

One of the GI Mentor’s big features is to be able to switch between upper GI endoscopy
and lower GI endoscopy at the click of a button. There are two upper GI endoscopy
modules which involve performing a complete survey of the upper GI tract with a forward
viewing video-
Across there are twenty virtual patient cases which come complete with case histories,
biological test results and x-
To aid rehearsal, the cases
are arranged in order from the more simple diagnostic tasks to complex cases involving
therapeutic procedures in patients with major pathologies.

Along with the upper GI endoscopy modules, the GI Mentor offers two comprehensive
lower GI endoscopy modules. These enable a complete survey of the lower GI tract
with an authentic forward viewing video-
Twenty virtual patient cases with full patient history are again present to enhance
realism. Along the way, trainees will encounter true-
Therapeutic procedures such as biopsy and polypectomy can be practiced as fully simulated procedures, with complete procedural feedback.

The emergency bleeding module on GI Mentor features ten virtual patients with emergency hemorrhaging in the upper GI tract, which all require immediate attention. This emergency bleeding module is particularly crucial due to the unpredictable nature of bleeding in the upper GI tract and the difficulty of training for such incidents, plus the necessarily quick response time.
Emergency Bleeding Complete Procedures Included:
• Complete surveys of the upper GI tract through emergency endoscopy
• Diagnostic procedures for patients who demonstrate symptoms of bleeding
• Therapeutic procedures using various accessories geared for bleeding
pathologies
Emergency Bleeding Features Included:
• Bleeding ulcers
• Bleding tumours
• Dieulafoy’s lesion
• Mallory-
• Spurting artery
• Blood oozing from clot edges
• Protruding submucosal vessels
Emergency Bleeding Accessories Included:
• Spray catheter
• Bipolar coagulation probe
• Injection needle
• Cold snare

The flexible sigmoidoscopy module on GI Mentor meets the growing need for training in this area. Increased awareness of the need for early population screening for colorectal cancer has made it imperative that endoscopists and trainees be provided with a means for practicing on a variety of patient anatomies and pathologies. With this in mind, the GI Mentor’s sigmoidoscopy cases have been created using real medical and patient data, and focus on focus specifically on sigmoidoscopy up to the transverse colon entrance in numerous virtual patients.
GI Mentor’s flexible sigmoidoscopy module will allow you to:
• Become familiar with flexible sigmoidoscopy and the
indications for colon cancer screening
• Practice on difficult and unusual anatomies
• Determine the appropriateness of sigmoidoscopy
procedures in high-
• Identify pathologies
• Practice endoscopic biopsy techniques
• Develop necessary skills and become familiar in
the use of endoscopy tools
• Make appropriate recommendations based on findings
Features of the sigmoidoscopy module:
• 10 complete virtual patient cases complete with patient
histories and case notes
• Examination of the anus, rectum, sigmoid and descending
colon
• Retro in the distal rectum for complete examination
• Identification of a variety of anatomies and pathologies

The GI mentor’s endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) module is the first and only application
to provide hands-
Main EUS simulation features:
• Over 30 EUS tasks, including didactic visual explanations
• Test ability of self
or others to recognise key US anatomy and landmarks
• Both linear and radial probes
• Realistic scope manoeuvring
• Haptic feedback
• Switch easily between anatomical and US view
• Option for split screen showing both views
• Realistic anatomy created from genuine from CT / MRI scans
• Zoom, pan and flip options
• Freeze US images at any time
• Use “characters” and “caliper” over frozen images
• Save frozen images for later review / teaching use -
Visual aids during EUS simulation:
• Use ‘labels’ feature to see instant anatomy identification on US view
• Click on
‘3D map’ to view a realistic 3D anatomical presentation
• 3D map includes an ultrasonography
beam that ‘slices’ anatomy for better
understanding
• Use ‘filter’ option to hide/highlight selected anatomy in 3D map
• View colour-
Performance evaluation:
• Review all saved images
• Indicates landmarks that were not properly identified
by user
• Indicates anatomy that was not properly identified by user
